International Museum Day 2013

The worldwide community of museums will celebrate the 36th International Museum Day on 18 May, 2013 on the suggested theme: Museums (Memory + Creativity = Social Change. Find more information on the official site of the IMD 2013!

The coming event will build on the success of IMD 2012, which garnered record-breaking participation with almost 32,000 museums hosting events in more than 129 countries. In 2011, IMD launched its own Facebook page, which by now attracted more than 2,500 friends.

The truly optimistic theme of the event in 2013 in the form of an equation dynamically gathers several concepts that are essential to defining what a museum is today, highlighting the universal nature of those institutions and their positive influence on society. It summarises the complexity of museum tasks and recalls that they are meant to contribute to community development and gathering together.
Specific programming could be built around the five topics suggested below:

  • Informal education structures
  • A social space rooted in its territory
  • An intergenerational link
  • Displaying heritage in a modern way
  • Innovative practices for a better conservation.

For the third consecutive year, International Museum Day will have a dedicated website as well as a Facebook page. On this site, you will be able to download the official IMD poster.

The scope of communications tools has widened, and participants can also download flyers, postcards and web banners for the event, on the IMD website. The site will be updated regularly with press releases, the communications kit and a calendar of activities offered by various museums around the world.
Also this year, each National Committee may send an activity programme for a maximum of five museums which will then be published on the IMD 2013 website up from January 2013.

We hope you will join the International Council of Museums in celebrating 36 years of this key event for the international museum community!

ALLGEMEIN

Der Internationale Museumstag wurde zwar 1977 ausgerufen, aber erst 1978 das erste Mal gefeiert. Hier der Wortlaut der ICOM-Resolution  vom 28. Mai 1977:

12th General Assembly of ICOM, Moscow, USSR, 28 May 1977
Resolution No. 5

International Museum Day
Noting the ever-growing role of museums of many countries among institutions of science, culture and technology, in line with deep-seated processes in the development of the aspirations and progressive actions of people throughout the world seeking ways to intensify communion and mutual understanding among peoples,

Considers it expedient, with the aim of further unifying the creative aspirations and efforts of museums and drawing the attention of the world public to their activity, to take a decision on the annual holding of an International Museum Day. This day to be held using the slogan: "Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples",

Recommends that the International Museum Day should be held annually on 18 May, starting in 1978, and accompanied by the opening of new museums and exhibitions, meetings with visitors, acquaintance of the public with the aims and tasks and practical activity of the International Council of Museums and its national organizations, publication of materials on this subject in the press and also by the organization of exchange exhibitions and international forums to discuss major problems of the theory and practice of the museum profession,
Expresses confidence that the annual International Museum Day will help to increase the role played by the museum which uses the universal language of the original object in order to develop international understanding.
