Der Deutsche Museumsbund, das deutsche Nationalkomitee des Internationalen Museumsrates (ICOM) sowie die regionalen Museumsämter und -verbände rufen zur Beteiligung am nächsten Internationalen Museumstag am Sonntag, 15. Mai 2011, auf.
30 Jahre Internationaler Museumstag (aus den ICOM-Mitteilungen 1/2007)
Der Internationale Museumstag wurde zwar 1977 ausgerufen, aber erst 1978 das erste Mal gefeiert. Hier der Wortlaut der ICOM-Resolution vom 28. Mai 1977:

International Museum Day
Noting the ever-growing role of museums of many countries among institutions of science, culture and technology, in line with deep-seated processes in the development of the aspirations and progressive actions of people throughout the world seeking ways to intensify communion and mutual understanding among peoples,
Considers it expedient, with the aim of further unifying the creative aspirations and efforts of museums and drawing the attention of the world public to their activity, to take a decision on the annual holding of an International Museum Day. This day to be held using the slogan: "Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples",
Recommends that the International Museum Day should be held annually on 18 May, starting in 1978, and accompanied by the opening of new museums and exhibitions, meetings with visitors, acquaintance of the public with the aims and tasks and practical activity of the International Council of Museums and its national organizations, publication of materials on this subject in the press and also by the organization of exchange exhibitions and international forums to discuss major problems of the theory and practice of the museum profession,
Expresses confidence that the annual International Museum Day will help to increase the role played by the museum which uses the universal language of the original object in order to develop international understanding.
DAS ZIEL
Ziel des Internationalen Museumstages ist, auf das breite Spektrum der Museumsarbeit und die thematische Vielfalt der etwa 6.500 Museen in Deutschland aufmerksam zu machen. Im Jahr 1977 ins Leben gerufen, möchte der Internationale Museumstag den Museen und seinen Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeitern in aller Welt die Möglichkeit geben, gemeinsam auf die Bedeutung ihrer Arbeit als Beitrag zum kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Leben hinzuweisen, und gleichzeitig Besucherinnen und Besucher ermuntern, die in den Einrichtungen bewahrten Schätze zu erkunden.
DAS MOTTO
Das Motto für das Jahr 2011 lautet
"Museums and Memory"
eine ausführliche Mottoerläuterung wird folgen.
"Museen für ein gesellschaftliches Miteinander" - "Museums for Social Harmony" lautete das Motto des Internationalen Museumstags im Jahr 2010. Das Ereignis stand unter der Schirmherrschaft des Präsidenten des Bundesrates, Präsident des Senats der Freien Hansestadt Bremen, Bürgermeister Jens Böhrnsen.
DIE AKTIONEN
Zahlreiche Museen – von den Heimat- und Regionalmuseen bis hin zu den großen staatlichen Einrichtungen – sind bereits jetzt aufgerufen mit Aktionen wie Sonderführungen, einem Blick hinter die Kulissen, Workshops, Museumsfesten, langen Museumsnächten oder freiem Eintritt den 34. Internationalen Museumstag am 15. Mai 2011 zu begehen.
